What is Human-Centered AI?

HCAI is the prioritization of human needs, values and capabilities to align with the development of artificial intelligence (AI). It takes a more holistic approach, ensuring that technology serves people in meaningful and responsible ways - a shift towards AI that enhances the human experience rather than merely achieving technical goals.

And Why it matters.

Much of the work ahead for humanity will be forming narratives through data that enable change. Change for humans and change for systems designed by humans. If data and AI are to live up to the promise of helping to improve decision making, then a deeper understanding via UX research and behavioral sciences will be the crucial partner. Not only humans in the loop, but humans owning the narrative for change. HCAI: Integrates ethical frameworks into its development, considering fairness, bias mitigation, and societal impact. This will require a team skilled at evidence-based human-centered design.

Leading with a People First approach:

5 Principles of HCD in Human-Centered AI

  1. Human-Centered Design for Impact
Building teams that include HCD UX researchers with diverse backgrounds in psychology, neuroscience and experience strategy. Robust interdisciplinary collaboration helping to provide insights grounded in empathy, research rigor and representative of a workforce’s problems.

  2. Enhancing Human Abilities by identifying use cases with users during discovery phase
Every enterprise needs to value their people as part of a transformation plan. Our shared goals should be to enhance people’s abilities and well-being, rather than replacing or diminishing their roles.

  3. Inclusive Design: Alignment with Ethical AI
Starting with an inclusive UX Research and Design approach that involves diverse perspectives ensures that the needs and values of all individuals are considered aligning with the broader movement towards ethical AI, emphasizing human rights, fairness, and diversity.

  4. Rapid Prototyping: Addressing Safety, Ethical, Social, and Cultural Implications
Mitigating risk with research and rapid prototyping of AI systems allows us to gather feedback - ensuring that safety, ethical, social, and cultural considerations are addressed at each stage of design.

  5. Building in Accessibility and Usability from the outset with the Experience Design System
Designing AI systems that are accessible, usable, and beneficial to all segments of society.
